Lufthansa extends suspension of multiple Middle-East routes amid Iran conflict
For the second time in a week, Lufthansa Group has lengthened its self-imposed no-fly window to parts of the Middle East as hostilities between Israel, the United States and Iran continue. In a statement released on 10 March the carrier said services to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Dammam are now cancelled through at least 15 March 2026; Tel Aviv flights remain suspended until 2 April, while Amman, Erbil and Beirut are off the board until 28 March, and Tehran until 30 April. The measures also apply to Eurowings, Austrian, SWISS and Brussels Airlines when they operate under Lufthansa marketing codes. The airline cites “persistently high air-space risk levels and unpredictable escalation scenarios” after missile exchanges near the Strait of Hormuz and reports of GPS spoofing over Iraq. German insurers have raised war-risk premiums for carriers operating east of Cyprus, making detours via the Red Sea commercially unattractive.

For German corporates the extension severs a key artery to Gulf markets just as Expo Dammam and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week gear up. BASF and Siemens Energy have chartered alternative capacity via Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways, but these routings add three to five hours each way and complicate crew-rotation schedules. Freight forwarders note a surge in demand for time-critical pharma shipments through Riyadh as shippers bypass the UAE hub model. Travel-management companies are advising clients to combine essential Middle-East trips with video meetings where possible and to route non-urgent travel through Europe-to-Riyadh connections that remain stable.

Amid the schedule upheaval, travelers still need to keep passports and paperwork in order. VisaHQ’s Germany portal (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) can fast-track visas for alternative gateways such as Riyadh, Istanbul or Doha, and provide up-to-date entry guidance when carriers suddenly change routings, ensuring compliance even as flight plans shift day by day.

Travellers already ticketed on suspended routes can rebook or refund free of charge; contract-rate passengers should confirm that their negotiated waivers override standard GDS auto-pricing. Aviation analysts believe the stand-off could accelerate plans to decouple Lufthansa’s Middle-East network from the core Frankfurt hub by expanding codeshares with Gulf carriers—a strategy floated before the pandemic but put on hold amid competition concerns. For now, however, direct connectivity from Germany to several key Gulf and Levant business centres will remain limited for at least another week.
