Virgin Atlantic suspends Dubai route after 16-hour ‘flight to nowhere’
Virgin Atlantic has halted all London-Dubai services for the rest of the winter season after a Heathrow-bound Airbus A350 was forced to abandon its approach to the Emirate, divert to Budapest for fuel and return to the UK—an ordeal that left passengers travelling for 16 hours but arriving back where they started.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of 8 March as Iranian drone and missile attacks triggered a temporary closure of UAE airspace.

The airline said safety criteria had not been met even after Dubai International reopened, prompting the captain of flight VS400 to turn around while over Saudi Arabia.

Hundreds of customers in both directions have since been re-routed or refunded, and the carrier has “paused” its recently launched Heathrow–Riyadh link as insurance premiums for Middle-East operations spike.

British Airways and easyJet continue to overfly the region but have introduced longer routings via Egyptian and Israeli air-corridors, adding up to 70 minutes to east-bound journeys.

Travel management companies report a surge in enquiries from corporate clients seeking assurances about risk assessments, while Lloyd’s of London underwriters say war-risk cover for carriers using Gulf hubs has doubled in a week.

Amid all this route reshuffling, travellers suddenly rebooked onto flights to Muscat, Jeddah or other alternatives may also find themselves needing fresh visas at short notice. VisaHQ’s UK portal (https://www.visahq.com/united-kingdom/) can fast-track applications for Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and many other destinations, providing real-time guidance and quick processing to keep both business and leisure itineraries on track.

For exporters and multinationals dependent on the Dubai hub, the suspension is a blow. “March is when UK project teams usually rotate in for summer infrastructure works across the GCC,” said Robert Ellis, mobility head at engineering giant Babcock. “Losing a daily wide-body service squeezes freight capacity and complicates crew rosters.”

Aviation analysts believe Virgin’s decision could accelerate a structural shift. “If instability persists, we may see UK carriers prioritise cities such as Muscat or Jeddah, which can be reached without crossing Iranian or Iraqi FIRs,” said John Strickland of JLS Consulting.

Virgin says it hopes to reinstate Dubai “once conditions allow”, but has offered fee-free date changes for tickets up to 31 May and warned travellers to monitor Foreign Office advice.
