Airlines serving the UK spent the weekend rewriting timetables after a wave of US-Israeli strikes on Iran prompted multiple Gulf states to close or severely restrict their airspace. An extensive survey by The National on 8 March shows more than 200 UK-linked sectors cancelled since Friday night.

British Airways has pulled services to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai and Tel Aviv, redeploying wide-body aircraft to operate four extra Muscat–Heathrow rotations between 9 and 12 March to evacuate stranded passengers. Virgin Atlantic’s Dubai cancellations were matched by a suspension of its Riyadh flights (see separate story), while Qatar Airways is running limited inbound ‘corridor’ flights to Doha restricted to those whose final destination is Qatar.

Regional carriers are equally affected: Oman Air has axed all flights to nine destinations—including Copenhagen and Baghdad—between 9 and 15 March, while Gulf Air remains grounded pending a noon Bahrain-time review. Business-critical cargo is also disrupted, with forwarders warning of 48-hour delays on shipments transiting Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone destined for the UK automotive sector.

In the midst of these sudden schedule changes, travelers may also need to secure replacement visas or travel documents at short notice. VisaHQ’s UK portal (https://www.visahq.com/united-kingdom/) offers expedited processing and real-time application tracking for more than 200 destinations, helping corporate mobility teams ensure that staff rerouted through alternative hubs remain compliant with entry requirements. Whether it’s an emergency e-visa for Muscat or a fresh Schengen permit after an unplanned stop in Madrid, the platform streamlines paperwork so passengers can focus on getting home.

Travel-risk consultants Advito estimate that at least 6,000 UK corporate travellers are displaced across the Gulf, India and East Africa. Companies are being urged to activate crisis-response protocols, track employee locations in real time, and verify that any rerouted itineraries do not inadvertently breach staff work-permit conditions. Employers with Posted Worker obligations inside the EU must also re-file A1 certificates if staff are forced to land in Schengen airports not listed in original travel plans.

While most analysts expect a phased reopening of Saudi and Bahraini airspace later this week, insurers caution that premium hikes imposed after the Ukraine invasion are set to stay. Mobility managers should therefore budget for a sustained rise in ticket prices on key UK–Gulf business corridors.
