Schengen Entry/Exit System Goes Live: Prague Airport Begins Biometric Border Checks
Prague’s Václav Havel Airport switched over to the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) at 06:00 this morning, joining every other external Schengen border in replacing passport stamps with a fully digital register. Non-EU travellers arriving in the Czech Republic are now asked to pause for a facial scan and four-fingerprint capture before proceeding to the baggage hall.

Border Police say the hardware roll-out was completed overnight in both arrival terminals, adding 16 self-service kiosks and six upgraded officer desks. According to airport COO Jiří Pos, average processing time in this first phase is “around 90 seconds per passenger”, but travellers should allow at least ten extra minutes until staff and visitors acclimatise to the workflow. Airlines using the airport’s transfer hub have been briefed to hold connecting flights by up to 20 minutes during the first fortnight of operation.

The EES stores biometric templates and time-stamped entry/exit data in a secure EU-LISA database for a maximum of three years, automatically flagging overstays and repeat visa-run patterns. Czech authorities expect the system to cut manual data entry, free up officers for secondary screening and provide a clearer picture of non-EU mobility patterns—useful for labour-market planning and overstayer enforcement.

Travellers unsure about their visa status—or companies tasked with moving personnel in and out of the Czech Republic—can simplify the paperwork by using VisaHQ’s platform (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/), which consolidates current Schengen rules, offers application assistance, and sends expiry alerts so no one is caught out by the new automated calculations.

For corporate mobility managers the immediate concern is queue time. Travel teams have been advised to build longer layovers into crew rotations and to pre-warn short-term assignees about the fingerprint requirement, which some third-country nationals still find intrusive. Prague Airport’s fast-track service has been temporarily suspended while software is integrated, but business-class passengers will again have a dedicated lane from 15 March.

Looking ahead, the airport will fold EES data into its automated risk-analysis platform and link the kiosks to the forthcoming ETIAS travel-authorisation system, scheduled for late-2027 launch. Companies relying on frequent Schengen hops should audit passport validity (minimum six-month rule still applies) and begin keeping their own electronic records of staff travel days to avoid compliance surprises once overstays are calculated automatically by the system.
