Finnair offers Muscat–Helsinki rescue service for passengers hit by Dubai cancellations
Hot on the heels of the government’s evacuation announcement, Finnair on 7 March updated its travel-advisory portal to confirm that it is "preparing to operate flights from Muscat, Oman, to Helsinki" to accommodate customers whose Dubai–Helsinki sector (AY1964) was cancelled between 28 February and 9 March. The first Muscat rotation is pencilled in for Tuesday 10 March, with additional services to follow subject to security assessments.

Affected passengers can transfer to the new flight free of charge via Finnair’s chat facility; telephone registrations are explicitly not accepted because of overloaded call queues. The airline cautions that SMS messages may not reach Dubai numbers due to network disruptions, so travellers should monitor e-mail closely. Seats will be allocated first to children, the elderly and individuals needing medical assistance before being opened on a rolling basis according to original return dates.

The ad-hoc operation—organised in cooperation with Finland’s MFA—will depart Oman because over-flight bans and insurance restrictions currently preclude Finnair aircraft from landing in the UAE. The one-hour coach transfer from Dubai to Muscat is deemed safer than flying through contested airspace. As the service is outside Finnair’s normal schedule, no pre-ordered extras (meals, pets, excess baggage) can be guaranteed, and the carrier’s usual business-class service will be pared back.

For corporate mobility teams the announcement presents both risk and opportunity. Employers with staff ticketed on the cancelled Dubai flights must decide quickly whether to accept the Muscat alternative, source seats on other airlines, or delay repatriation altogether. Travel managers should also review travellers’ Schengen visa validity: non-EU employees returning to Finland may face fines if documents lapse during the extended journey. Insurers and relocation vendors should be looped in early to coordinate coverage for the cross-border bus leg.

If any traveller discovers that a visa extension or a fresh entry permit is required at short notice, VisaHQ’s online platform can expedite the paperwork. Through its Finland portal (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) the service walks applicants through requirements, submits documents to the appropriate consulates and provides real-time status updates—saving corporate travel teams precious hours while this dynamic situation unfolds.

Finnair reiterates that safety remains the "top priority" and warns that the plan could change at the last minute if regional intelligence or NOTAMs shift. Passengers are reminded to check Oman’s entry rules—especially COVID-19 and vaccination requirements—before boarding the rescue flight.
