Lufthansa flags heightened uncertainty for German business travel as Middle-East conflict closes Gulf airspace
German flag-carrier Lufthansa used the release of its 2025 results on 6 March 2026 to warn corporate customers that the sudden US–Israel–Iran escalation is already reshaping long-haul routings and could up-end 2026 capacity plans.

According to chief executive Carsten Spohr, the overnight closure of airspace above the Gulf – including key hubs such as Dubai and Doha – has diverted thousands of passengers through Frankfurt and Munich. While this is temporarily boosting load-factors, Spohr stressed that the concentration of global traffic over the Gulf had become “a geopolitical Achilles’ heel”, exposing travel managers to higher costs, longer flight times and volatile schedules.

Fuel hedging is another concern. Lufthansa said the Strait of Hormuz shutdown is driving oil-price spikes that could feed through to surcharges if the conflict drags on. Senior buyers for multinationals were advised to “stress-test” 2026 travel budgets against worst-case jet-fuel scenarios and to consider re-routing travellers through Lufthansa Group partners such as Austrian and Swiss, which have greater ability to overfly Russia and the Arctic when Gulf routes are blocked.

For travel departments now scrambling to redraw itineraries, VisaHQ can help cut through the red tape. Its Germany portal (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) provides real-time visa requirements, expedited processing and alerts for new transit stops, ensuring crews and corporate travellers remain compliant even as Lufthansa’s flight paths shift on short notice.

The airline noted a sharp jump in Asia-bound corporate bookings via Frankfurt as travellers avoid Middle-East connections. Capacity on the Frankfurt-Bangkok, Frankfurt-Singapore and Munich-Delhi corridors will be up-gauged with A350s from 11 March. However, the group still plans to cut 4,000 mainly head-office jobs this year as part of its post-pandemic restructuring.

Global mobility managers should monitor Lufthansa’s planned summer timetable revision (due out 25 March). If the Gulf remains closed, expect longer block times, thinner frequencies to secondary Asian markets and potential pressure on premium-cabin availability during peak conference season. For German exporters whose staff rely on the airline’s extensive African network, contingency routings via Iberia or Air France/KLM may be needed if West-bound aircraft must also skirt the conflict zone.
