Prague Airport to Close Main Runway 06/24 for 4½-Month Modernisation From 30 March 2026
Václav Havel Airport Prague has confirmed that its main runway 06/24 will shut from 06:00 CET on 30 March until 14 August 2026 for the second and final phase of a CZK 1.2 billion modernisation project. The 3.7-kilometre CAT III-B runway—used by roughly 70 percent of all movements—will undergo resurfacing, lighting upgrades and installation of new surface-movement guidance systems designed to cut taxi-times and reduce CO₂ emissions.

During the outage, all jet traffic will be funnelled onto secondary runway 12/30, which is shorter and certified only to CAT I. Airlines have already received slot-re-allocation proposals via EUROCONTROL’s Network Operations Plan, and the airport expects peak-hour capacity to fall by up to 30 percent. Carriers with heavy long-haul equipment, including Emirates, Qatar Airways and Korean Air, are being urged to up-gauge to high-thrust variants or accept load penalties.

For passengers suddenly re-routing through alternative gateways or extending stays in Schengen transit zones, making sure travel documents are in order is critical. VisaHQ’s Czech Republic portal (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/) can fast-track visa applications, provide real-time entry rules and courier passports worldwide, helping travel managers navigate changing itineraries without administrative headaches.

Airport management says night-time curfews will remain unchanged, but residents of Prague 6 and Kladno—under the alternative flight path—should anticipate higher noise levels. To mitigate the impact, the airport is offering temporary acoustic insulation grants to homeowners and has asked corporate travel managers to encourage use of rail links from Vienna and Munich where feasible.

For globally mobile staff, the closure could translate into longer minimum-connect times and an uptick in missed connections at key hubs. Czech exporters have also been advised that belly-hold cargo capacity will tighten, with charter freighters likely to divert to Ostrava or Leipzig. Travel buyers should review waiver policies and consider flexible tickets until normal operations resume in mid-August.
