Europe-wide flight chaos on 5 March ripples into Prague, disrupting business itineraries
A perfect storm of weather, strike fallout and redirected aircraft after the closure of parts of Middle-East airspace swept across Europe on 5 March 2026, forcing airlines to cancel 217 flights and delay a further 806, according to real-time analytics company AirHelp. Václav Havel Airport Prague escaped the worst of the cancellations but still logged more than forty delayed departures before noon, primarily to hub airports in Frankfurt, Amsterdam and London. For corporate travellers that meant missed onward long-haul connections, broken meeting schedules and a scramble for hotel rooms around Ruzyne.

Travel-management companies (TMCs) that serve Czech multinationals told the ČTK newswire that half of all same-day business trips booked out of Prague were either abandoned or converted to last-minute video calls. Rail links could not soak up the sudden passenger overflow because Deutsche Bahn’s cross-border services were already operating with reduced capacity owing to engineering work near Dresden.

Under EU Regulation 261/2004 passengers are entitled to meals, accommodation and—in certain circumstances—financial compensation, but lawyers at the Prague-based firm Rowan Legal caution that severe weather and security diversions qualify as “extraordinary circumstances,” meaning cash payouts are unlikely. Instead, firms should focus on re-routing staff within the alliance networks of their contracted carriers and reminding travellers to keep all receipts for out-of-pocket expenses, they advised.

AirHelp’s data show that nearly one-third of the affected flights were bound for the five European hubs most frequently used by Czech exporters—Frankfurt, Paris-CDG, Amsterdam-Schiphol, Munich and Zürich—exposing the vulnerability of the country’s globally oriented, just-in-time supply chains to aviation shocks. Freight forwarders reported delays of up to 24 hours for high-value components normally flown via passenger belly-hold from Prague.

Whether your plans are back on track or you’re considering switching to alternative routes, remember that travel documents may still require attention. VisaHQ’s Czech Republic portal (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/) lets business travellers and mobility managers quickly verify visa requirements, apply online, and track application status in real time, removing one more source of stress when flights are already unpredictable.

Looking ahead, analysts warn that the combination of rolling strike action at French air-traffic-control centres and the ongoing re-routing around Middle-East no-fly zones could prolong schedule volatility well into next week. Mobility managers are therefore advising Czech executives to build extra buffer time into itineraries, opt for flexible tickets, and register for airline disruption alerts.
