Qantas reroutes flagship Perth–London flight via Singapore as Gulf airspace closes
Qantas has suspended the world-famous QF9 non-stop service from Perth to London Heathrow, rerouting the flight through Singapore from 4 March 2026 after the closure of multiple Middle-East flight corridors triggered by the escalating Iran conflict. The detour adds about three hours to the journey but, crucially, restores normal passenger and cargo loads that the Boeing 787-9 could no longer lift on the ultra-long-haul diversion around Iranian and Iraqi airspace.

For corporate mobility managers the change is more than an annoying schedule tweak. QF9 is the preferred option for mining, energy and government travellers based in Western Australia who need to reach Europe quickly without transiting the Gulf. With Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways still grounded, demand has now funnelled into the Singapore-Europe “Kangaroo Route”, driving business-class fares above A$14,000 return for departures this month. Travel buyers have already begun shifting traffic to secondary hubs such as Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to contain costs.

If itineraries now force staff to pick up new transit visas for Singapore, Thailand or Malaysia, VisaHQ’s Australian portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) can manage the entire application process online, giving mobility teams a single dashboard to track approvals and keep travellers compliant despite the rapidly changing routings.

Qantas is automatically re-booking affected customers onto the new two-leg service (re-numbered QF209/209A). Passengers who no longer wish to travel can request fee-free date changes or a full refund; however, under Australian consumer law the carrier is not obliged to pay compensation because the reroute is the result of a security event outside its control. Travellers with onward connections on British Airways or oneworld partners should reconfirm minimum-connection-time assumptions, as Heathrow slots later in the day are already constrained.

The airline has not given an end-date for the Singapore stopover, stating only that it will review the routing “once Gulf airspace is declared safe by all relevant authorities”. Industry watchers note that a similar detour enacted briefly in April 2024 lasted 12 days. At the time of writing, NOTAMs issued by the UK and US aviation regulators still warn operators to avoid Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE. Companies moving talent between Australia and Europe should therefore budget for a month of higher fares and longer duty times, and remind assignees transiting Singapore that the city-state’s strict e-cigarette ban also applies to transfer passengers.

In the medium term the disruption could accelerate Qantas’ Project Sunrise preparations. Aircraft earmarked for Sydney-London non-stop services are due for delivery in late 2026, but analysts argue that permanent geo-political volatility in the Gulf makes a Singapore fuel stop an increasingly attractive “insurance” even for the future A350-1000 variant. Mobility teams will need to watch how these strategic fleet choices reshape one of Australia’s most important corporate travel corridors.
