Dublin Airport to close South Runway for three days of emergency repairs
Dublin Airport has confirmed that its South Runway (10R/28L) will be withdrawn from service for 72 hours next week to allow urgent pavement repairs on Taxiway Sierra, the corridor that links the runway with the main terminal complex. The closure will run from 09:00 on Monday, 9 March until 09:00 on Thursday, 12 March 2026. During that window all arrivals and departures—including night-time freight operations—will be funnelled onto the North Runway (10L/28R).

According to airport operator daa, prolonged heavy rainfall over the winter accelerated the deterioration of the asphalt surface, creating a risk of foreign-object debris (FOD) that could damage aircraft engines and tyres. More than 100 specialist staff will mill off 50 mm of worn asphalt, relay a fresh surface, replace about 40 inset ground-lights and restore all taxiway markings. Routine maintenance such as grass-cutting and repainting of safety zones will be bundled into the closure to avoid separate disruptions later in the year.

The project has been signed off by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which mandates strict pavement-condition standards for certified aerodromes. Airlines have already been contacted to revise slot allocations; daa says the North Runway’s 3,110-metre length can accommodate wide-body traffic but warns that single-runway operations reduce scheduling flexibility and could lengthen queues at peak times.

Travellers who may need to tweak itineraries or extend stays because of the temporary runway closure can get quick help from VisaHQ. The company’s Ireland portal (https://www.visahq.com/ireland/) provides up-to-date visa requirements, digital application tools and courier support, ensuring last-minute travel changes don’t run into documentation hurdles.

For business travellers the advice is to build extra buffer time into itineraries between 9 and 12 March, monitor carrier notifications closely and consider switching to early-morning or late-evening departures when capacity pressure eases. Companies providing time-critical cargo should liaise with ground-handling agents about potential delays in aircraft turnaround. The works underscore the vulnerability of airport infrastructure to extreme weather events and the importance of proactive asset management for Ireland’s primary international gateway.

Once the repairs are complete, daa will publish a detailed post-project report, including pavement-condition data and any operational lessons learned. The authority notes that if weather conditions deteriorate further, the repair window may shift, but stakeholders will receive at least 48 hours’ notice of any change.
