Dust-laden ‘calima’ heads for Mallorca, airlines warn of possible diversions and slot delays
The Spanish state meteorological agency AEMET has issued an advisory for the Balearic Islands warning that Saharan dust clouds—known locally as a calima—will blanket Mallorca between 3 and 5 March. The phenomenon is expected to bring “mud rain”, reduced visibility and gusty easterly winds, conditions that historically force airlines to increase approach minima or divert traffic to mainland alternates.

Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport handled more than 420 flights per day in early March last year. Ground-handling agents say they have been told to prepare de-icing rigs and to brief ramp crews on dust-particle hazards to engines and GPU filters.

Should the weather disruption force travellers to reroute through other countries or extend their time in Spain beyond the usual visa-free allowance, VisaHQ can help streamline any necessary visa applications or extensions. Its dedicated Spain portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) offers quick online processing and up-to-date entry guidance, ensuring compliance even when itineraries change at the last minute.

easyJet and Eurowings have issued proactive change-fee waivers for Balearic services through 6 March, while cargo operator Swiftair is considering rerouting perishable loads to Valencia.

Hotel groups such as Meliá report a spike in last-minute cancellation queries from leisure travellers, although corporate group bookings scheduled around the World Olive Oil Exhibition at IFEMA in Madrid are so far unaffected. Mobility advisers note that the recent upsurge in remote-worker relocations to the Balearics means more residents unfamiliar with calima events may underestimate health and transport impacts.

While the dust storm is unlikely to match the severity of February 2022’s record episode, visibility below 2,000 metres can trigger flow-control measures by Spanish air-navigation provider Enaire, resulting in departure slot restrictions across the peninsula. Travellers with tight connections in Madrid or Barcelona should build in extra buffer time until the dust disperses later this week.
