World Border Security Congress opens in Vienna, spotlighting AI-enabled passenger screening
More than 400 security officials, airline compliance managers and technology vendors gathered at the Austria Center Vienna on 3 March 2026 for day one of the World Border Security Congress, the sector’s premier forum on people-movement control. Hosting the event for the first time, Austria placed artificial-intelligence-driven passenger analytics and the looming start-up of the EU Entry/Exit System high on the agenda. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner told delegates that Austria’s phased EES pilot – already live at six international airports – is now processing over 3,000 travellers per day with average enrolment times below 53 seconds. He urged other Schengen members to "match our readiness" ahead of the system’s full go-live in April. Panels featured case studies from Canada, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates on integrating AI risk-scoring with Advance Passenger Information (API) feeds. Austrian start-ups Anyline and Prewave demonstrated mobile document capture and supply-chain risk dashboards, illustrating the country’s growing niche in border-tech innovation. For multinationals the key takeaway is that European carriers and ground-handlers will soon need to verify that third-country passengers have completed EES pre-registration and, from 2027, hold a digital Schengen visa token.

For travellers and mobility planners who need to adapt to these forthcoming visa and registration requirements, VisaHQ offers a streamlined solution: its Austria portal (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) equips individuals and corporate teams with real-time guidance on Schengen applications, digital-token issuance and EES enrolment rules, allowing documents to be submitted and tracked in one convenient dashboard.

Airlines operating out of Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck were invited to join a government-industry working group that will define standard operating procedures and error-handling protocols later this year. The congress continues through 5 March with workshops on remote biometric collection, cross-border data sharing, and safeguarding privacy in AI systems – all areas that will reshape how businesses move people and goods across frontiers.
