Finnair Grounds Doha and Dubai Flights as Gulf Airspace Closes
Finnair passengers woke up to an urgent email on Monday, 2 March 2026, informing them that every flight on the Helsinki-Doha and Helsinki-Dubai routes had been cancelled at least until 10 March (Doha) and 28 March (Dubai). The Finnish flag-carrier said the decision followed a rapid escalation in the US-Israel–Iran conflict, which triggered widespread air-defence activity and the temporary closure of portions of Iraqi, Iranian, Kuwaiti and Emirati airspace. Finnair’s safety team confirmed that, for the time being, all company aircraft will route well clear of the Gulf, adding extra flying time to many Asia services that normally skirt the region. Corporate travel managers were advised to contact Finnair’s group-desk urgently: the airline is offering one free date change within a ±14-day window or a full refund, but warns that re-booking options are scarce because multiple European and Asian carriers have simultaneously pulled out of the Gulf hubs. Travellers already en-route were told to call customer service to arrange their return via alternative gateways such as Istanbul or Frankfurt.

For passengers scrambling to reroute at short notice, VisaHQ can remove one major headache: up-to-the-minute visa information and express processing are available through its Finland portal (https://www.visahq.com/finland/). Whether your revised itinerary takes you via Turkey, Germany or another unexpected stop, VisaHQ lets you confirm entry requirements and secure the necessary e-visas or transit permits online, keeping your trip compliant even as flight plans keep shifting.

Finnair’s move is particularly disruptive for Nordic multinationals with engineering projects in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, many of whom rely on the daily wide-body connection for crew changes and time-critical spare-parts shipments. Freight clients have also been affected: Finnair Cargo confirmed that its A350 belly-hold capacity to Dubai, a key link for Finnish high-tech exports, is suspended for at least three weeks. Analysts note that the crisis lands on top of the carrier’s longer-running challenge of closed Russian airspace, which has already lengthened most Asian routings by up to two hours. “Finnair’s business-traveller proposition is under severe pressure,” says aviation consultant Aaro Järvinen. “With both the Siberian corridor and the Gulf gateway effectively out of bounds, corporates will have to rethink routings, budgets and travel-risk policies for the remainder of the winter season.” Travellers holding tickets for later in March should monitor Finnair’s travel-update page daily; the airline says further cancellations are possible if security conditions deteriorate. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs reiterated its advice that Finnish nationals register their travel plans and consider postponing non-essential trips to the Gulf until flight schedules stabilise.
