Middle-East Conflict Grounds 12 Qatar and Emirates Flights at Guarulhos, Forcing Turn-Backs and Mass Re-Bookings
The widening military confrontation between the United States–Israel coalition and Iran reverberated all the way to Brazil this weekend, as airspace closures across the Persian Gulf forced Qatar Airways and Emirates to cancel or turn back a dozen flights linked to São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU).

According to the Federal Police and flight-tracking service FlightRadar 24, an Emirates A380 bound for Dubai and a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 en route to Doha both departed GRU late on 29 February but diverted mid-Atlantic and returned to São Paulo after Gulf regulators shut down large portions of regional airspace. Over the following 36 hours eight additional departures and two inbound services were scrubbed, leaving hundreds of Brazilian tourists, expatriate workers and connecting business travellers stranded.

Airport authorities established dedicated immigration lanes to process passengers who had technically left the country but re-entered without crossing an external border. Qatar Airways offered hotel vouchers near the airport, while Emirates re-protected some travellers on codeshare partner TAP via Lisbon, though seats were limited.

For passengers suddenly forced to reroute through Europe or Africa, ensuring the correct transit or short-stay visas becomes critical. VisaHQ’s digital platform can fast-track Brazilian, Schengen, and other necessary visas, provide real-time status updates, and advise on entry requirements that may change during crises—see https://www.visahq.com/brazil/ for details.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry (Itamaraty) issued a rare Level-3 travel advisory on 1 March urging nationals to defer non-essential trips to the Gulf until commercial operations stabilise. Corporate security firms Control Risks and International SOS recommended diverting Brazil–Asia traffic over Europe or Southern Africa, adding up to three hours’ flying time but avoiding the conflict zone entirely.

With Gulf carriers playing a key role in linking Brazil to India, China and Southeast Asia, extended disruption could hit supply-chain managers planning project cargo movements ahead of Brazil’s peak construction season. Mobility teams should compile alternate routings through Europe, monitor carrier waiver policies and remind assignees that Brazilian law requires airlines to offer a full refund if a cancellation exceeds 24 hours.
