Westbahn inaugurates high-speed Southern Line service linking Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt and Villach
Austria’s privately-owned open-access operator Westbahn marked a milestone for domestic and cross-border mobility on 1 March 2026 when its first “SMILE” high-speed train departed Vienna Hauptbahnhof for Villach. The long-anticipated Southern Line extension brings Westbahn’s low-cost, high-frequency model—until now confined to the West (Vienna–Salzburg-Munich) corridor—onto the busy Südbahn axis through Styria and Carinthia. Three daily return services now connect Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Bruck an der Mur, Graz, Kühnsdorf-Klopeiner See, Klagenfurt, Pörtschach and Villach in under four hours, with headline Vienna–Graz journey times of 2 h 05 m and Vienna–Klagenfurt in 3 h 25 m.

For international passengers keen to sample the new route, visa and entry formalities are just as straightforward: VisaHQ (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) provides a quick online check of Schengen requirements and a guided application process, meaning travellers can secure the necessary documents long before their SMILE train leaves Vienna Hauptbahnhof.

Westbahn says frequency will double to five returns in May once additional Stadler six-car KISS sets are delivered. For business travellers the service closes a gap that had opened after Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) diverted many daytime Railjet paths to long-distance freight slots during engineering works. Corporates with mobility policies tied to door-to-door travel time report savings of up to 45 minutes compared with the fastest current Railjet pattern—and rail now clearly beats air on both Vienna–Graz and Vienna–Klagenfurt. Early adopters such as chip-maker Infineon (Villach) and AVL List (Graz) told The Local they expect to shift “well over half” of internal trips from leased cars to rail. Regional governments have hailed the competitive spur. Styria’s Economic Minister Barbara Eibinger-Miedl said Westbahn’s entry "ends the single-provider era" on the South line and should stabilise fares. Tourism boards in Carinthia and along the Koralmbahn construction corridor are already marketing weekend breaks tied to the new timetable. Practically, ticketing follows Westbahn’s dynamic online model; a Vienna–Graz single starts at €19.90 in advance and includes free Wi-Fi, 230-V sockets and quiet-zone seating. Corporate clients can integrate with the Trainline Partner API for automated expense coding. Holders of the ÖBB Vorteilscard receive a 10 % discount under an interoperability agreement, but ÖBB’s Klimaticket is not yet accepted on Westbahn’s Southern Line. Travellers should also note that seat reservations are optional but strongly recommended for Friday evenings and Monday mornings when commuter demand is high.
