Over 1,000 flights scrapped; UAE pledges hotel bills for stranded tourists
Regional airspace closures have cascaded into one of the largest single-day aviation disruptions the Gulf has ever seen. Onmanorama reports that more than 1,000 flights across the Middle East were cancelled on 1 March 2026, with Dubai International and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International airports among the hardest hit.

The UAE’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GCAA) says it has already processed 20,200 affected passengers, placing them in hotels and covering meals at government expense. The move mirrors the country’s Covid-19 era policy of underwriting layover costs to protect its tourism brand, but the scale is far larger: estimates suggest the nightly bill could top AED 45 million if disruptions persist.

Travel-data firm FlightAware counted 18,000 delays and 2,350 outright cancellations globally since Saturday afternoon as airlines bypass Gulf air corridors. Analysts warn that fare levels on the few remaining routings are spiking, with India–Europe round-trips quoting at 2.5 times last week’s average.

Amid the uncertainty, travellers who suddenly need to extend their Gulf visas or secure entry to alternative transit points can lean on VisaHQ’s online platform for rapid documentation support. The service’s dedicated United Arab Emirates portal (https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/) streamlines emergency visa applications, courier pick-ups and real-time status updates, helping passengers avoid further delays and costly penalties.

Beyond stranded leisure travellers, high-profile business passengers are also caught. Olympic badminton medallist P.V. Sindhu and several FTSE-100 executives en-route to board meetings in Dubai were among those posting images from airport holding areas. Immigration queues have stalled because carriers are not issuing onward boarding passes, forcing passengers to await hotel vouchers before clearing formalities.

Employers should note that the GCAA’s sponsorship covers only passengers ticketed on UAE-based airlines; those flying third-country carriers must rely on airline-of-origin duty obligations, which vary widely. Mobility insurers recommend collecting written denial letters if accommodation is refused, to support later reimbursement claims.
