Lucky Air Launches Direct Chengdu–Zhuhai Service, Strengthening China’s Inland–Coastal Business Links
On 28 February, Kunming-based carrier Lucky Air inaugurated a thrice-weekly non-stop flight between Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and Zhuhai Jinwan Airport using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Although both endpoints lie within China, the new route plugs a critical gap in fast east–west connectivity: Chengdu is the manufacturing and high-tech hub of western China, while Zhuhai sits inside the Greater Bay Area (GBA) across the bridge from Macau and 70 kilometres from Hong Kong.

For corporate mobility managers, the service trims travel time by up to three hours compared with one-stop itineraries via Shanghai or Guangzhou. That is welcome news for semiconductor suppliers shuttling engineers between Sichuan fabs and GBA assembly plants, as well as for MICE organisers moving delegates to Zhuhai’s booming convention scene. One-way economy fares opened at RMB 480 (about USD 66), signalling aggressive competition with high-speed rail, which takes over ten hours door-to-door.

Lucky Air’s move is also strategically timed. The airline is positioning itself to capture overflow traffic from the 9.5 billion-trip Spring Festival migration and the early-March Canton Fair build-up. Load-factor data released by Chengdu airport show domestic frequencies are already running at 112 % of 2019 levels, but western China still suffers limited direct access to coastal business zones; the Chengdu–Zhuhai link begins to close that gap.

While the Chengdu–Zhuhai flight itself is domestic, many international travelers will still need visas to enter China before making the connection. VisaHQ can simplify that step: its online platform (https://www.visahq.com/china/) handles Chinese business-visa applications end-to-end, from document checks to courier delivery and real-time status alerts, helping mobility teams keep trip planning agile as new domestic routes open up.

Travel-programme implications are straightforward. Firms with personnel split between Sichuan and the Pearl River Delta should add the new flight to approved-carrier lists and re-run cost-comparison models; early bookings indicate that advance-purchase fares are cheaper than high-speed-rail second-class tickets. Duty-of-care teams should note that Zhuhai’s Jinwan Airport currently offers limited late-night ground transport, so travellers arriving on the 22:40 flight may need pre-arranged transfers.

At a macro level, the route underlines how second-tier Chinese carriers are reinventing point-to-point service to complement the country’s vast high-speed-rail network, giving business travellers more flexibility and redundancy amid occasional rail or weather disruptions.
