UK Electronic Travel Authorisation now compulsory for Finnish travellers
From 25 February 2026, Finnish nationals – along with all other visa-exempt visitors – must hold an approved UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding a plane or ferry to the United Kingdom. The rule came into force at 00:01 GMT and applies to trips for tourism, business, short-term study and airport transit. Unlike the Schengen Area, the UK has decided to pre-screen every non-visa traveller through a digital permission system similar to the US ESTA. An ETA costs £16, is linked electronically to the passport and remains valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Carriers have been instructed to deny boarding to any passenger whose passport is not matched to a valid ETA, e-Visa or residence permit. British and Irish citizens are exempt, but dual nationals travelling on a Finnish passport must still obtain an ETA. For business-mobility managers the change ends decades of truly friction-free travel between Finland and the UK. Finnish staff heading to London for meetings will now have to factor in the extra step of obtaining an ETA—normally approved within minutes, but the UK Home Office advises applying at least three days in advance in case manual review is required. Organisations that schedule last-minute trips, operate rotational assignments or route cargo crews through UK hubs will need to update travel policies, booking check-lists and pre-trip compliance briefings. Finnish travel agencies and HR-mobility teams are already integrating ETA prompts into booking workflows. Finnair says online check-in now asks UK-bound passengers to enter their ETA reference; without it, boarding passes will not be issued.

Travellers looking for a hassle-free way to secure their UK ETA can simplify the process via VisaHQ’s Finland portal (https://www.visahq.com/finland/). The service offers step-by-step guidance, deadline reminders and a central dashboard for managing multiple passports—an efficient solution for individuals and corporate mobility teams alike.

Airlines also face new verification duties at departure airports—a deterrent against non-compliant travellers being turned back on arrival. The UK Government argues that ETAs enhance security by allowing authorities to vet passengers against watch-lists before they set foot on British soil. Critics warn the system could create data-privacy concerns and undermine spontaneous travel. The EU’s own ETIAS scheme, expected in 2026, means that Britons heading to Finland will soon face reciprocal pre-travel authorisations—signalling a new era of digital borders across Europe.
