UK Enforces Digital Permission to Travel as ETA Becomes Mandatory
The UK Home Office formally switched on its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) regime at 00:01 on 25 February 2026, publishing the enabling “UK enforces digital permission to travel” notice the previous evening (24 February). All non-visa nationals from 85 countries—including the United States, Canada, France, Singapore and Japan—must now hold an approved £16 ETA, an eVisa or other digital status before airlines, ferry operators or rail carriers can allow boarding. British and Irish citizens remain exempt, but dual British nationals are required to show either a current UK passport or a Certificate of Entitlement (CoE) proving their right of abode. Migration Minister Mike Tapp described the move as “vital” to border modernisation and security, noting that more than 19 million ETAs have already been issued since the pilot phase began in October 2023. The government says the system aligns UK requirements with comparable schemes such as the US ESTA and the forthcoming EU ETIAS and that ETA revenues—over £383 million to date—are being reinvested in digitising the border. For employers and travel managers the change is immediate: staff travelling on or after 25 February without an ETA risk denied boarding, missed meetings and additional costs. Corporates are being urged to audit upcoming itineraries for frequent travellers from visa-waiver countries, verify passport expiry dates (the ETA is electronically linked), and brief travellers on the three-day processing buffer the Home Office recommends.

To simplify compliance, VisaHQ offers a streamlined ETA application and tracking service for both businesses and individual travellers. From an easy-to-use online dashboard at https://www.visahq.com/united-kingdom/ the company can submit ETA requests in bulk, monitor approval status, alert you when passports or permissions are about to expire and even integrate data feeds into corporate travel tools—removing much of the administrative burden the new scheme introduces.

Airlines have integrated ETA checks into DCS (departure-control system) messaging; carriers that allow boarding in error will be liable for penalties and must repatriate passengers. The notice also confirms the next digital milestone—issuing CoEs in e-format from 26 February—which will end the need to replace the vignette every time a passport changes. Combined with the phase-out of physical visa stickers by the end of 2026, the policy points to a fully contactless UK border within four years. Immigration advisers say businesses should prepare staff for a future in which physical BRP cards disappear and status is proved exclusively via UKVI online accounts. Practically, travellers should download the UK ETA app (iOS/Android), have biometric passports ready, and apply well ahead of departure during the roll-out’s early days, when processing spikes are expected. Failure to adapt could see senior executives standing at foreign departure gates with no legal means to fly. Corporate mobility teams that develop ETA tracking dashboards and keep passport details synchronised with UKVI accounts will be best placed to avoid disruption and keep mobile talent moving smoothly.
