Finland has finished erecting the first 110-kilometre stretch of its new eastern border fence, a project that will ultimately cover around 200 km of the 1,340-km land frontier with Russia. The Finnish Border Guard confirmed completion of the Southeast Finland section on 26 February 2026, describing it as a critical upgrade to surveillance capacity in a zone that once carried the heaviest cross-border traffic. Built of a 3-metre steel mesh topped with barbed wire and integrated with thermal cameras, radar, motion sensors and anti-drone equipment, the barrier is designed to deter illegal crossings and give patrols early warning of large or violent groups. Colonel Jaakko Olli, commander of the Southeast Finland district, said the fence “significantly improves situational awareness and the mobility of patrols”, allowing resources to be deployed more efficiently at a time of heightened hybrid-threat concerns. More than 600 workers and 150 machines were mobilised for the construction, and nearly 1,000 private landowners cooperated in land-use negotiations. The project also required new service roads, an independent power grid and fibre connectivity to support the fence’s smart-surveillance backbone. Authorities are now procuring supplementary radio-technical sensors and counter-UAS systems that will plug directly into the fence’s network. For companies moving staff or cargo between Finland and Russia, the physical barrier formalises what has effectively been a hard border since Finland shut its crossing points in late 2023 in response to what it calls “instrumentalised migration”. Logistics operators must route road freight through approved terminals and prepare for more rigorous inspections; passenger‐carriers should expect checks to shift deeper inside Finnish territory once patrol mobility improves.

At this juncture, advisory services such as VisaHQ can smooth the transition for cross-border travellers. Through its Finland portal (https://www.visahq.com/finland/), the firm consolidates the latest visa instructions, work-permit criteria and transit updates, guiding companies and private citizens alike through the paperwork now required at the reinforced boundary.

Multinationals with operations on both sides of the frontier are already reassessing employee shuttles, residency compliance and emergency-evacuation plans. The fence will extend north in phases, prioritising sectors with road access and limited natural obstacles. Parliament has earmarked €288 million for the full build-out, which remains on schedule for completion in 2027. While critics warn of environmental impact and strained relations with Moscow, the project enjoys broad public backing and is seen by policymakers as indispensable to safeguarding Finland’s new role as NATO’s north-eastern frontier state.
