Lufthansa launches cabin-refit programme for German Airbus A320 fleet
In a bid to sharpen its competitiveness on European business routes, Lufthansa has kicked off a multi-year retrofit of 38 Airbus A320 aircraft based in Germany. The first refurbished jet—registration D-AIZY—returned to service in mid-February, and the airline confirmed the programme in a 21 February press release carried by Japanese industry portal *Traicy*. Key upgrades include Geven slimline seats with adjustable headrests, a deeper recline in the Business Class cabin and USB-A/C power at every seat. Overhead bins are 40 percent larger, mirroring the "Airspace" concept already flying on Lufthansa’s A350s and new Boeing 787s. The carrier says each conversion takes about 30 days and involves more than 1,000 individual parts from 100 suppliers.

Whether you’re a travel manager arranging last-minute meetings in Frankfurt or a project lead coordinating teams across the bloc, VisaHQ can streamline the documentation that underpins those journeys. Its dedicated Germany portal (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) consolidates Schengen visa requirements, business invitation templates and real-time entry alerts, ensuring flight bookings align seamlessly with compliant paperwork.

Although a cosmetic improvement, the project has strategic weight. Lufthansa’s short-haul network out of Frankfurt and Munich is crucial for feeding long-haul traffic; premium economy-style comfort on an hour-long hop can influence corporate travel policies when buyers compare Lufthansa with easyJet, Ryanair and rail. From a global-mobility perspective, the refit supports Germany’s wider push to remain an attractive hub for business travellers despite rising rail competition and repeated strike headlines. Assignment managers booking intra-EU itineraries can expect more consistent cabin standards across the fleet by 2029, but should check aircraft type on specific rotations as the rollout will be gradual. The retrofit also dovetails with Lufthansa’s sustainability messaging: lighter seats cut fuel burn, helping the airline meet the EU’s impending ReFuelEU targets without reducing frequencies on core German routes.
