Nationwide Aviation Strike Moved to 26 February After Olympic Ban – Travellers Brace for Disruption
ROME – Italian airline crews and ground staff will stage a 24-hour strike on 26 February, a walkout originally planned for 16 February but postponed after Transport Minister Matteo Salvini banned industrial action during the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. Euronews and sector portal The Flight Club report that unions representing ITA Airways, easyJet and Vueling personnel confirmed the new date over the weekend. The stoppage falls outside Italy’s ‘protected flight windows’, so carriers may cancel or retime services throughout the day except for guaranteed slots (07:00-10:00 and 18:00-21:00). ENAC, the civil-aviation authority, has asked airlines to publish final cancellation lists by 22 February, giving passengers at least 72 hours’ notice. Corporate-travel managers should activate contingency plans, especially for intra-EU day returns and crew changes tied to Mediterranean cruise turn-arounds.

At this point, it’s also worth remembering that many business travellers still need to arrange or renew visas before departure. VisaHQ streamlines the entire process for Italian trips—offering online applications, live status tracking and expert guidance—making it easy to secure the right entry documents ahead of any disruption; see https://www.visahq.com/italy/ for details.

Rail unions have hinted they may call a solidarity strike, raising the risk of multimodal knock-on effects. Travellers heading to post-Olympic business events in Milan or Verona should consider rerouting via Zurich, Nice or Munich. Under EU261 rules airlines must offer re-routing or refunds but are not required to pay cash compensation when strikes are outside their control. Nevertheless, companies should budget for hotel and meal costs if travellers are stranded.
