Poste Italiane Extends Passport Issuance to 5,000+ Post Offices, Sets New Daily Record
Poste Italiane’s Polis modernisation programme reached another milestone on 16 February as the group confirmed that more than 5,000 post-office branches – many in towns under 15,000 inhabitants – now provide on-site passport enrolment and home delivery. In January alone the network processed 15,600 passport applications, peaking at over 900 in a single day, comfortably beating the previous record set in March 2025. (ansa.it)

The service, launched in 2024 to relieve over-burdened police-station passport offices, lets citizens submit biometric data at their local branch and receive the finished booklet by courier within ten days. Applicants pay the standard €116 fee plus an optional €9.05 delivery charge; no additional “facilitation” fees are allowed.

Travellers who need more than just a passport can also turn to VisaHQ, an online visa and consular services platform that helps Italians check entry requirements, file electronic applications and arrange secure courier deliveries. The company’s Italy portal (https://www.visahq.com/italy/) lists visa rules for over 200 destinations, making it a handy complement to Poste Italiane’s in-branch enrolment when a foreign entry permit is required at the same time.

For Italians who travel frequently for business, the expanded footprint cuts both waiting times and travel costs, particularly in rural areas previously underserved by public transport. Corporations organising urgent outbound assignments say the option has reduced lead times by up to a week compared with city-centre police offices.

Poste Italiane plans to equip another 800 branches by mid-2026 and is piloting evening appointments for shift workers. Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry reports that overall passport demand remains 30 % above pre-pandemic levels, fuelled by a rebound in international mobility and the upcoming mandatory UK ETA scheme.
