Wizz Air adds Varna route and boosts 12 other services from Larnaca for summer 2026
Low-cost carrier Wizz Air unveiled an aggressive expansion of its Cypriot base on 2 February 2026. The airline will station a fifth A321neo at Larnaca International Airport and open a thrice-weekly link to Varna, Bulgaria, giving Cyprus a direct connection to the Black-Sea tech hub for the first time. At the same time it will raise frequencies on 12 existing routes—including London Gatwick, Abu Dhabi, Prague and Budapest—taking total weekly departures from Larnaca to more than 140.

The additional capacity comes as passenger volumes through Cyprus’ two airports continue to break records, and mirrors the government’s strategy of deepening air links with both tourism and talent-sending markets. Daily flights to London Gatwick will be especially welcomed by the large Cypriot diaspora and by British firms that base regional teams on the island for tax and lifestyle reasons. Extra seats to Abu Dhabi and Kutaisi strengthen reach into the Middle East and Caucasus, widening the catchment for tech professionals and seafarers moving through Cyprus.

For employers, the development means greater scheduling flexibility and potentially lower travel costs during the peak summer mobility season. HR teams coordinating short-term assignments will be able to route staff through secondary European cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Radom or Wroclaw instead of funneling everyone through congested hubs. Travel managers should, however, watch fare buckets closely—Wizz Air’s headline €24.99 launch fares are capacity-controlled and ancillary fees (for cabin bags, seat selection and check-in) can quickly erode savings.

Before firms start booking those new flights, they should also verify entry requirements for assignees and short-term visitors. VisaHQ’s Cyprus portal (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) offers an easy way to check visa rules for more than 200 nationalities and to arrange electronic travel authorizations or full visa processing online, sparing HR teams the administrative back-and-forth with consulates.

Airport authorities expect the expansion to push annual throughput past 14 million passengers, underlining the urgency of the €170 million terminal upgrades authorised last year. Companies bringing equipment or high-value goods should note that construction works around the baggage handling system will begin in April and may lengthen customs clearance windows.

Overall, Wizz Air’s move reinforces Cyprus’ image as a nimble Eastern Mediterranean hub that offers both quality of life for remote talent and fast access to European, Middle-Eastern and Caucasus markets.
