EU-India Free Trade Agreement Signed—Austrian Exporters Eye 5 000 New Jobs and a Jump in Business Travel

EU-India Free Trade Agreement Signed—Austrian Exporters Eye 5 000 New Jobs and a Jump in Business Travel
Just two days after negotiators in New Delhi announced the long-awaited EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Austrian analysts are already crunching the numbers. The European Innovation Council’s 29 January briefing notes that the deal will slash or eliminate duties on 99 % of EU goods over phased periods, creating the largest free-trade zone by population on the planet. (intellectual-property-helpdesk.ec.europa.eu) UniCredit Bank Austria told ORF that a doubling of exports to India would translate into roughly 5 000 additional industrial jobs, concentrated in Upper Austria’s machinery sector and Styria’s automotive suppliers. From a mobility perspective, the agreement is a game-changer. Under its services chapter India commits to issue five-year, multi-entry business visas within ten working days for EU managers and specialists. Reciprocal commitments will see Austria extend the maximum validity of its Schengen category-C business visas for Indian executives from one year to three, provided the FTA enters into force as planned in the first quarter of 2027. Vienna’s Wirtschaftskammer says this will “cut red-tape costs for our Mittelstand by at least €4 million annually.”

Travel demand is already reacting. Austrian Airlines confirmed it will maintain double-daily Vienna–Delhi rotations through summer 2026, citing “robust forward bookings from corporate accounts.” Meanwhile, India’s Vistara plans to up-gauge one of its flights to a Boeing 787-9 configured with premium economy—an increasingly popular cabin for engineers shuttling between headquarters and Indian production sites.

Immigration advisers caution, however, that internal compliance workloads may rise. Companies must issue posted-worker notifications for longer stints and ensure equal-pay rules are met when Indian staff visit Austrian plants beyond 14 days—a requirement unchanged by the FTA. HR teams should therefore integrate the new visa flexibilities into assignment planning tools while maintaining rigorous record-keeping.

Beyond business travel, the pact’s mobility provisions include a pilot Youth Mobility Scheme allowing up to 3 000 Indian graduates per year to live and work in participating EU countries for 12 months. Austria has signalled interest, saying it would dovetail neatly with its Red-White-Red Card pathway for STEM talent.
