Foreign tourist overnights in Finland up 7 % in November—business travel rebound continues
Statistics Finland’s flash report released late on 17 January shows that non-resident visitors booked nearly half a million overnight stays in November 2025, a year-on-year increase of seven percent. Although the data are a backward-looking indicator, they are the first to capture the start of the northern-lights and winter-sports season that traditionally drives high-yield travel to Lapland.

Of the 1.56 million total November nights, domestic travellers accounted for 1.06 million (–1 % YoY) while international visitors provided the growth. The United Kingdom, Germany and the United States remained the top three source markets, reflecting both leisure demand and the gradual return of corporate meetings and incentive trips postponed during earlier economic uncertainty. Hotel occupancy across Finland reached 54 percent, with Lapland commanding an average nightly rate of €228, more than 70 percent above the national average of €131.

For mobility managers, the figures suggest that capacity constraints and peak-season pricing will persist in northern destinations through the first quarter of 2026. Companies planning site visits to mining, energy and technology projects in Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Oulu should secure rooms and domestic flights early and budget for higher rates. Helsinki and Tampere, by contrast, still have mid-week availability at business-friendly prices, thanks to a sluggish domestic market.

Finavia, Finland’s airport operator, said separately that charter slots for Asian markets are almost fully allocated for February, hinting at further inflows that could tighten accommodation and ground-transport supply. Travel-trade associations welcomed the positive trend but urged the government to streamline Schengen visa processing in key feeder markets, noting that appointment backlogs in India and China remain above pre-pandemic levels.

Travellers and corporates facing those visa appointment bottlenecks can simplify the process through VisaHQ’s digital platform, which offers real-time slot monitoring, step-by-step document guidance and secure courier return of passports. The service—available at https://www.visahq.com/finland/—helps applicants obtain Finnish and other Schengen visas faster, ensuring travel plans remain on schedule during the busy winter season.

The November data will feed into the national Tourism and Events Programme 2026-2029, to be unveiled next week at the Matka Travel Fair in Helsinki. Stakeholders expect the strategy to prioritise sustainable growth, digital visitor flows and year-round demand diversification.
