EU register confirms Austria’s internal Schengen border checks extended to 15 June 2026

EU register confirms Austria’s internal Schengen border checks extended to 15 June 2026
The European Commission’s updated “Temporary Re-introduction of Border Control” register, released on 13 January, confirms that Austria will continue passport checks on its borders with Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia until 15 June 2026. Vienna first reinstated the controls in October 2025 under Article 25a of the Schengen Borders Code, citing irregular migration along the Western Balkan route and terrorist-threat spill-overs from the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

While Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stresses that inspections are risk-based and increasingly mobile rather than fixed, logistics operators report wait times of up to 45 minutes at peak hours in Nickelsdorf (HU) and Spielfeld (SI). Random ID checks have also intensified on cross-border trains between Vienna, Bratislava and Prague.

For anyone uncertain about what documents to carry, VisaHQ can streamline the process. Their Austria hub (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) provides real-time updates on visa and transit rules, helps users complete online applications, and offers courier services for fast processing—useful for drivers, business travelers and expatriates who need to stay compliant amid shifting border policies.

For businesses, the six-month renewal means continued scheduling buffers for bus charters, commuter shuttles and just-in-time deliveries. Mobility managers should brief drivers to carry passports, residence permits and cargo manifests even on intra-EU legs, and remind expatriate employees that spot checks can occur well inside Austrian territory.

Industry associations argue that pro-longed internal controls undermine the single market and are calling for digital pre-clearance and additional staffing to minimise delays. The government counters that Germany, Denmark and others maintain similar measures, making Austria’s stance proportionate.
VisaHQ's expert visas and immigration team helps individuals and companies navigate global travel, work, and residency requirements. We handle document preparation, application filings, government agencies coordination, every aspect necessary to ensure fast, compliant, and stress-free approvals.
