Lane closures on Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge may slow cross-border coach services

Lane closures on Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge may slow cross-border coach services
The Transport Department has reminded motorists that road works on the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB) require staggered lane closures from 15 to 17 December. Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. today, the left- and middle-hand lanes of the westbound carriageway toward Zhuhai and Macao will be shut, leaving only one lane open for traffic.

Although private-car volumes on weekdays are modest, coach operators running the 45-minute airport shuttle and the newly launched HK Express “Intermodal Pass” expect journeys to take 10-15 minutes longer during peak slots. Travellers transiting between Hong Kong International Airport and Macao’s casinos—or factories in Zhuhai’s Hengqin free-trade zone—should build contingency time into itineraries.

For those same travellers, ensuring passports, China visas or Macao entry permits are in order is just as important as allowing extra minutes on the road. VisaHQ’s Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) can expedite visa processing, offer real-time status tracking and arrange courier collection, so commuters affected by the bridge lane closures won’t be caught out by paperwork issues while traffic slows.

Corporate mobility teams with cross-border assignees should also alert employees to possible cascading delays at the Macau and Zhuhai immigration checkpoints if traffic backs up on the bridge approach. The Immigration Department has not announced any extension of e-gate hours, so peak queues could reach 30-40 minutes this afternoon.

The HZMB handled over 150 000 daily passenger trips during the last Lunar New Year peak, and authorities aim to keep disruption minimal by confining works to daylight hours. Further maintenance windows are expected in January, and the Transport Department will issue separate notices. Multinationals with shuttle-bus contracts should monitor future advisories to avoid missing flight connections.
