Six Border-Point Polling Stations, Including HZMB and Sheung Shui, Debut for LegCo Election
Voting in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council election no longer stops at the city limits. China Daily reports that six ‘near-boundary’ polling stations opened at major land, sea and air checkpoints on election day, 7 December, including the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge Passenger Clearance Building, Sheung Shui railway terminus and Hong Kong International Airport.

The concept—trial-run at the 2021 polls—lets travellers who cross the border for business, family or transit cast ballots without making a special trip back to their home district. Officials say the model is especially useful for Pearl River Delta commuters and Macau-based executives who work in Hong Kong during the week but live across the estuary.

Each checkpoint station is geofenced within immigration areas and is staffed by both electoral officers and Immigration Department personnel. Electronic voter rolls are synced in real time to prevent duplicate voting, while CCTV and polling-station-specific QR codes ensure ballot security. Signage in English, Cantonese and Mandarin directs travellers to the booths, and queues averaged under ten minutes during the morning peak.

For corporates shuttling employees between Hong Kong and mainland factories, the new stations cut downtime. Rather than arranging costly overnight stays to preserve voting rights, firms can keep itineraries intact. Travel-management companies expect marginal gains in duty-of-care compliance and productivity.

Analysts say the move also hints at a broader ‘Border 2.0’ vision in which civic, customs and commercial services co-locate at gateway facilities, mirroring Singapore’s Changi Jewel concept. If successful, observers anticipate that by the 2027 election the model could expand to Lo Wu and the Wanchai Ferry Pier.
