December Strike Calendar Signals Significant Disruption to Italian Business Travel from 9–24 December
Travel-risk consultancy Adept Travel published an updated strike calendar on 3 December warning of rolling industrial action across Italy’s transport sector in the run-up to the holiday season. The disruptions begin with a 24-hour walk-out on Rome’s ATAC network on 9 December and escalate to a 48-hour national ferry strike by Tirrenia CIN and Moby from 9–11 December.

Scope – Local transport strikes are scheduled in Milan, Naples and Florence throughout the fortnight, while air-traffic-control unions have announced a four-hour stoppage for 19 December. The calendar also flags a nationwide rail strike on 23 December, traditionally one of the busiest getaway days of the year.

Implications for mobility – Companies relocating staff or arranging short-term assignments should build at least 24 hours’ buffer around domestic connections. Travellers connecting through Fiumicino are advised to favour the Leonardo Express rail link, which is protected during most local strikes, or arrange private transfers. Ferry cancellations could disrupt supply-chain moves to Sardinia and Sicily just as retailers load Christmas inventory.

Mitigation tips – Adept Travel recommends booking refundable tickets, monitoring the Ministry of Transport’s real-time ‘Strike Info’ portal and issuing notarised deleghe (authorisations) so assignees can collect residence permits if appointment dates fall during strikes. Employers may also invoke Italy’s smart-working decree, still in force until 31 December, to keep productivity intact.
