Vignette and rail fare hikes take effect as Austria rings in December

Vignette and rail fare hikes take effect as Austria rings in December
Travellers and mobility managers face higher ground-transport costs from 1 December 2025 as Austria’s latest round of price adjustments kicks in. The annual motorway vignette—mandatory for cars using the country’s Autobahn network—rises by 2.9 per cent to €106.80. Companies operating vehicle fleets should update travel budgets immediately; fines for driving without a valid vignette remain at €120 on-the-spot.

The increases coincide with Austria’s wider austerity programme, which earlier this year lifted passport and ID-card fees by nearly 50 per cent. The government argues that index-linked adjustments are necessary to cover infrastructure maintenance, but business-travel lobbies warn that cumulative cost rises erode Austria’s competitiveness as a regional hub.

Rail passengers will feel the impact next: ÖBB’s new timetable on 14 December introduces an average fare rise of 3.5 per cent, including popular Railjet routes between Vienna and Munich, Prague and Budapest. Corporates relying on Austria’s Klimaticket for workforce mobility will also pay more after an August increase.

Consumer groups have urged travellers to buy digital vignettes only from official channels following a spike in fraudulent third-party websites. ÖBB, meanwhile, advises frequent travellers to lock in January meetings now before the dynamic-pricing engine recalibrates.
