Eight One-Day Strikes Announced; Finnair Cancels 300 Flights and Warns 39,000 Travellers
Finnish labour unions have called eight separate one-day strikes between 4 and 13 December, escalating an industrial dispute that has already disrupted logistics and manufacturing. The Finnish Air Line Pilots’ Association (SLL) will participate with walk-outs on 9 and 13 December, forcing flag-carrier Finnair to pre-emptively cancel around 300 flights. The airline estimates that 39,000 customers will be affected, with the heaviest impact on its Helsinki hub and European short-haul network.

Finnair has started rebooking passengers and is offering refunds to those who choose not to travel. Corporate travel managers are being urged to check passive PNRs and ensure that travellers’ profiles contain up-to-date mobile numbers so that automated notifications reach them quickly. While the strikes are slated to last 24 hours each, ripple effects are expected the day before and after as aircraft and crews reposition.

The industrial action centres on wage growth and rostering guarantees following a cost-cutting programme that helped Finnair survive pandemic losses. Talks mediated by Finland’s National Conciliator broke down last week. If no settlement is reached, SLL has signalled that further stoppages could follow in January—traditionally a peak month for winter-season traffic to Lapland.

Business-critical travellers should explore rail or road alternatives on domestic routes such as Helsinki–Tampere and Helsinki–Turku, or book seats on SAS, Norwegian or airBaltic for regional connections. Under EU261 rules, Finnair must provide duty of care—including meals, accommodation and alternative transport—even though the disruption stems from a strike. However, compensation payments of €250–€600 may be excluded because industrial action is classified as an ‘extraordinary circumstance’; companies should verify coverage with travel-insurance providers.

The wider series of one-day strikes will also hit Finnish ports, postal services and selected manufacturing plants. Freight forwarders anticipate backlogs at Vuosaari Harbour and Turku Port, potentially delaying spare-parts shipments just as many firms close for Christmas. Mobility teams should alert expatriates awaiting household goods or project cargo that clearance times could lengthen by several days.
