A major power failure at Heathrow’s main electrical sub-station late on 27 November forced the UK hub to operate with reduced runway capacity, prompting British Airways to axe additional flights on the pivotal Larnaca–Heathrow corridor on 28 November. The carrier cancelled flights BA671/670—its early evening rotation—and had already pulled the morning service.
Passengers are being rebooked onto weekend flights or rerouted via Gatwick and Manchester; however, premium-class and interline seats are scarce ahead of the holiday peak. Hermes Airports warned that aircraft and crews could be out of position through Saturday, extending disruption for Cypriot travellers and cargo shippers.
Corporate mobility managers with assignees commuting between Nicosia and London are advised to monitor status hourly and consider alternative routings via Athens, Vienna or Dubai. Freight forwarders have been told to expect 24–48-hour delays for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and high-tech components moving through Heathrow’s cargo centre.
Industry groups say the incident exposes Cyprus’ dependence on a single UK gateway and renews calls for more year-round flights to regional British airports. Travel insurers reminded passengers that EU261 compensation does not apply to “extraordinary circumstances”, but vouchers and duty-of-care provisions do.
Heathrow expects partial restoration of power by late Friday; BA has so far retained its overnight Larnaca flight but will decide closer to departure.
