Nation-wide strike on 28 November to hit trains, ferries and airport links

Nation-wide strike on 28 November to hit trains, ferries and airport links
Travellers planning to move around Italy on Friday, 28 November face a patchwork of cancellations as grassroots unions Cobas, Usb, Cub and others stage a 24-hour general strike against the government’s budget. Published on 27 November, the Transport Ministry’s bulletin confirms the walk-out will affect both public and private sectors.

Long-distance and regional rail services—including high-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains—will run only during the protected windows of 06:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00. Local buses, metro systems and some ferry routes to Sardinia and Sicily are also expected to operate a holiday-style timetable.

Airports are not formally included, but aviation ground-handling staff from Air France and KLM are joining the protest between 09:00 and 17:00; passengers landing in Rome or Milan may find onward rail connections suspended.

The strike kicks off a month of industrial unrest: Italy’s largest union, CGIL, has already called a 21-hour strike for 12 December, and ferry operators Tirrenia CIN and Moby have announced a 48-hour stoppage from 9–11 December.

Global mobility managers are advising assignees and business travellers to build in extra buffer time, book hotel rooms near airports and keep receipts for emergency taxis, which remain reimbursable under most corporate travel policies.
