Prague City Council on 18 November authorised the first phase of a comprehensive modernisation of the capital’s camera and monitoring system, allocating roughly CZK 5 million (€204,000) for new digital equipment. The project—implemented by municipal technology firm THMP—will replace ageing analogue cameras with 40 networked pan-tilt-zoom units and ten fixed high-definition devices, supported by two new recording servers and upgraded fibre links.

Although primarily a public-safety initiative, the upgrade has clear mobility ramifications. Prague hosts more than 9,000 corporate assignees and receives over 2 million business visitors a year; many congregate around the city’s historic core, where petty crime and traffic bottlenecks frequently disrupt itineraries. Real-time analytics from the new cameras will allow city police to redirect patrols faster and traffic controllers to adjust light sequences when congestion spikes, reducing delays for airport transfers.

The investment also dovetails with national preparations for the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). By 2026, Prague Airport and major railway stations must integrate biometric kiosks that feed into national security databases. Having a city-wide digital backbone will enable seamless data-sharing between municipal and state authorities when foreign visitors trigger watch-list alerts.

For relocation and travel-risk professionals, the modernisation should translate into lower incident rates and quicker response times. However, the Czech Data Protection Authority has reminded the council that the EU’s new AI Act treats video analytics as ‘high-risk’, requiring strict impact assessments. Companies whose staff appear regularly in the footage—couriers, field engineers, tour leaders—may wish to update their privacy notices accordingly.

Phase two of the project, due in mid-2026, will expand coverage to the Nusle business district and add licence-plate recognition at bridges feeding the inner ring road—another boon for commuters using car-sharing services.
