Canada Warns Travellers to Austria and Other Schengen States to Prepare for ETIAS in 2026

Canada Warns Travellers to Austria and Other Schengen States to Prepare for ETIAS in 2026
The Canadian government is stepping up its communication campaign on Europe’s forthcoming travel authorisation system, ETIAS, after Brussels confirmed last week that the €7 permit will launch in late 2026. A round-up article published on 16 November notes that Austria, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Hungary are among the 30 participating states whose borders will require the electronic pre-clearance from visa-exempt visitors, including Canadians.

Although ETIAS is still more than a year away, Ottawa fears that outdated online information and social-media rumours could see travellers turned away if they fail to obtain approval once the system goes live. Officials are therefore urging Canadians planning 2026 ski holidays in Tyrol or city breaks in Vienna to monitor both the EU’s and Canada’s travel-advisory portals.

For Austrian inbound tourism and conference organisers, the messaging is a timely reminder to build ETIAS lead-times into future marketing and delegate-management cycles—particularly for North-American visitors accustomed to spontaneous, last-minute bookings. Corporate mobility teams should also start mapping ETIAS compliance into assignment check-lists for short-term projects scheduled after Q4 2026.

Under current EU plans, ETIAS will apply to stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day window and will be valid for three years or until the passport expires. Applications are expected to be processed within minutes for most travellers, but manual reviews could take up to 30 days in complex cases. Carrying proof of approval—digital or printed—will be mandatory at airline check-in and at Schengen entry points.

Austria’s Interior Ministry says it will roll out public information screens at Vienna International Airport ahead of the launch and will add ETIAS FAQs to its English-language immigration portal in early 2026.
