Chinese COMAC C919 set for first international appearance at Dubai Airshow

Chinese COMAC C919 set for first international appearance at Dubai Airshow
Reuters reports that next week’s Dubai Airshow (17–21 November) will feature the international debut of China’s COMAC C919 narrow-body jetliner, marking the aircraft’s first showcase outside domestic events. The appearance will pit the C919 directly against the Airbus A320 neo and Boeing 737 MAX on a stage frequented by Middle-Eastern and African carriers—markets Beijing views as fertile ground for aviation diplomacy and long-term route development.

The C919, certified in China in 2022 and flying limited commercial services with China Eastern, still lacks European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) type certificates. Nonetheless, industry analysts see the Dubai showing as a step toward global acceptance, potentially unlocking export sales that could diversify airline fleets serving China and, over time, expand city-pair options for business travellers.

If the programme gains traction, foreign carriers operating the C919 could negotiate mutual maintenance bases and codeshares with Chinese airlines—enhancing connectivity into secondary Chinese cities that currently rely on domestically operated services. For corporate travel managers, this could translate into more direct flights and competitive fares on routes linking manufacturing hubs in inland China with markets in the Gulf and Africa.

The airshow spotlight also reinforces China’s broader aviation narrative: combined with the recent Air China Cargo A350F order and state support for Sustainable Aviation Fuel trials, Beijing is signalling that it intends to be an end-to-end player in the global aviation value chain—from aircraft manufacturing to green operations.

Executives attending the airshow should monitor any Memoranda of Understanding signed between COMAC and regional carriers such as flydubai or Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Air. Early-stage commitments could accelerate bilateral air-service negotiations, affecting flight rights and frequency allocations as soon as landing-gear deliveries begin around 2027.
