Austrian Airlines to open Vienna–Bergen route as Nordics demand surges
Austrian Airlines (OS) has announced that it will launch a nonstop seasonal service from Vienna (VIE) to Bergen (BGO) from 1 June 2026, responding to double-digit growth in leisure and MICE traffic between Austria and Norway’s west coast. The news was released on 10 November 2025 in a joint statement with destination-marketing body Fjord Norway.

The Star Alliance carrier will operate the route three times per week with Airbus A320neo aircraft configured for both business and economy cabins. Flight timings – a late-morning departure from Vienna and an early-afternoon return from Bergen – have been designed to facilitate long-weekend breaks and to feed Austrian’s evening bank of long-haul departures. Network planners said Bergen was the “logical next step” after successful launches to Tromsø (2023) and Evenes (2025), pointing to an 11 % rise in Austrian overnight stays in Western Norway last year.

For Austrian corporates the link reduces travel time to Norway’s substantial energy, maritime-technology and aquaculture clusters, which currently require at least one connection via Oslo, Copenhagen or Frankfurt. The tourism sector also expects benefits: Vienna-based tour operator Kneissl anticipates packages that combine a city break with fjord cruises, while Norway-origin traffic gains a one-stop option to South-Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East via Austrian’s hub.

Airport operator Flughafen Wien welcomed the capacity addition, noting that it supports its strategy of rebuilding long-haul feed and diversifying beyond traditional Central-European markets. Norwegian regional carrier Widerøe plans to interline with the service, offering onward domestic connections to Ålesund, Tromsø and the Lofoten islands.

Travel managers should brief travellers that the route will be seasonal (June–mid-September) in its first year and that checked-through baggage agreements with partners such as Widerøe and SAS are expected but not yet finalised. Companies with project teams in Norway’s offshore sector may wish to negotiate mid-week corporate fares in advance, as early demand forecasts indicate healthy load factors.
