Perugia activists demand faster residence-permit processing as queues grow

Perugia activists demand faster residence-permit processing as queues grow
Dozens of migrants and local supporters demonstrated outside Perugia’s Questura on 22 October 2025, unfurling a banner that read “Permesso di soggiorno subito” (“Residence permit now”). Organisers from the O.R.A. collective said some applicants have waited more than nine months for renewals, leaving them unable to work legally, open bank accounts or sign leases.

Parents with small children joined the protest, highlighting the human impact of administrative delays. Police representatives acknowledged the backlog, citing a 35 % spike in applications after new family-reunification rules took effect this year. They promised to add Saturday appointments and redeploy staff from lower-volume districts.

Local employers, especially in the agri-food sector, warn that prolonged uncertainty discourages seasonal workers from returning. Immigration NGOs are urging the Interior Ministry to allocate additional resources from the national PNRR digital-transition fund to modernise booking systems and enable online uploads of supporting documents.

The demonstration ended peacefully but activists vowed to return if processing times do not fall below the 60-day statutory limit by year-end.
