Thailand Grants Automatic Visa Grace Period for Tourists Stranded by Middle-East Airspace Crisis
As flight cancellations ripple across Asia following the closure of large swathes of Middle-Eastern airspace, Thailand’s Immigration Bureau announced on 3 March – and confirmed on 5 March – that foreign tourists whose visas expired on or after 28 February will not incur over-stay fines and may apply for a free 30-day extension. The policy is aimed at an estimated 50,000 travellers unable to leave, including several thousand French holiday-makers whose return flights were routed via Dubai or Doha.

Normally, Thailand levies a penalty of 500 baht (about €13) per day, capped at 20,000 baht, for overstaying. Waiving the fee removes a significant financial worry and simplifies rebooking once flights resume. Affected travellers must keep proof of cancellation or delay and present it to immigration officers when departing or applying for the discretionary extension.

Local tourism businesses have welcomed the decision. Hotels in Phuket and Chiang Mai report occupancy stabilising after an initial wave of cancellations, helped by a government fund that compensates accommodation providers up to 2,000 baht per stranded guest per day. Airlines operating indirect routings via Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are offering discounted rescue fares for EU citizens.

For those unsure about the paperwork needed for a Thai visa extension, VisaHQ can simplify the process. Through its French portal (https://www.visahq.com/france/), the online service offers step-by-step guidance, document checklists and live customer support, ensuring travellers have everything required before visiting immigration authorities.

The French consulate in Bangkok advises citizens to register on Ariane, France’s travel crisis platform, to receive evacuation alerts should the regional situation deteriorate. Travel insurers are reminding clients that force-majeure clauses may limit coverage for conflict-related delays, underscoring the importance of retaining all airline correspondence for potential reimbursement claims.

While the measure is temporary, it highlights the fragmented global response to the Middle-East conflict. Qatar, Sri Lanka and India have introduced similar ad-hoc leniency, but rules vary by country. Corporate mobility teams are urged to map visa-overstay risks for staff on multi-leg journeys through the region.
