WestJet exit leaves Lethbridge without scheduled service after June 24; city scrambles to court new carriers
Regional connectivity in southern Alberta took a hit on March 3 when WestJet confirmed it will terminate its daily Lethbridge (YQL)–Calgary route effective June 24, 2026. The City of Lethbridge published an extensive FAQ outlining community concerns and its strategy to replace the service, which accounts for only two per cent of the airport’s 33,000 annual flight movements but is the sole scheduled passenger link. WestJet cited financial performance for the withdrawal, which mirrors a simultaneous pull-out from Medicine Hat. The decision comes despite multimillion-dollar upgrades to YQL’s terminal and airfield—93 per cent funded by federal and provincial grants—completed in 2025. City officials stress that the modernised infrastructure, including expanded aprons and upgraded navigation aids, positions Lethbridge to attract alternate carriers.

For corporate travellers, the immediate impact is longer surface trips to Calgary or potentially pricier charter options. Industries with rotational workforces—agri-food processing, renewable-energy projects and cross-border trucking—must revisit travel budgets and assignment timelines. Medevac, RCMP and flight-training operations continue, but the loss of scheduled service could affect talent-attraction efforts as employers compete with centres boasting nonstop air links.

While flight options contract, travellers can at least remove visa headaches: VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/canada/) can fast-track Canadian entry permits for visiting technicians or arrange U.S. and other destination visas, ensuring sudden reroutes through Calgary or Medicine Hat aren’t stalled by paperwork.

The city has opened talks with multiple carriers, including ULCCs and regional turboprop operators, and is exploring revenue-guarantee models similar to those used in northern B.C. Another avenue is leveraging southern Alberta’s agri-tourism growth to pitch seasonal routes to carriers already serving Calgary.

In the interim, mobility managers should advise staff to book refundable fares via Calgary and budget extra ground-transfer time (two hours by road). Companies that relied on same-day Lethbridge-Calgary hops for U.S. connections may need to adjust overnight policies or shift travellers to Medicine Hat until replacement service materialises.
