Immigration Department confirms 194 Hongkongers in Middle East safe; hotline remains active
Hong Kong’s Immigration Department (ImmD) says all 194 residents who have sought assistance after being caught in the Middle-East conflict are currently safe and accounted for. The department has activated its 24-hour assistance hotline (+852 1868) and is working with Chinese missions in Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Jordan to arrange onward travel or temporary accommodation. Officials explain that most enquiries relate to rebooking advice and documentary requirements when itineraries change repeatedly. ImmD is issuing facilitation letters for those whose Hong Kong Re-entry Permits or visas may expire during the unexpected stay, and is liaising with airlines to prioritise vulnerable travellers.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs advises residents still planning essential travel to register their itineraries on the ‘Registration of Outbound Travel Information’ (ROTI) system so they can receive SMS security updates. Non-essential trips to Iran, Iraq, Israel and neighbouring Gulf states remain discouraged under the government’s Red Outbound Travel Alert.

For Hongkongers needing to confirm whether a sudden route change demands a new entry permit—be it a Schengen transit visa or a last-minute ASEAN waiver—VisaHQ’s Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) provides real-time requirements, electronic applications and courier collection for physical documents, helping travellers sidestep embassy queues and avoid overstays.

Employers with secondees in the region are reminded that duty-of-care obligations include mental-health support. Several relocation firms are offering temporary serviced apartments in Hong Kong at discounted rates for staff and families returning earlier than planned.

ImmD added that Hong Kong residents transiting Europe or Southeast Asia on their way home should ensure they meet any Schengen or ASEAN visa-waiver rules if layovers exceed 24 hours because of disrupted schedules.
