Finnair halts Doha & Dubai routes until late March as Gulf airspace closes
Finnair confirmed on 2 March 2026 that every flight on its Helsinki–Doha rotation (AY1981/1982) will be cancelled through at least 10 March, while its seasonal Helsinki–Dubai service is suspended until 28 March. The decision follows the rapid widening of the Iran–Israel conflict, which prompted Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and neighbouring states to restrict or close segments of their airspace.

Although Finnair’s Gulf network is limited to one daily Boeing-A350 service to Doha (operated under a strategic partnership with Qatar Airways) and a winter-sun leisure rotation to Dubai, the routes are strategically important. Doha feeds Finnair’s long-haul traffic to Asia and Africa via Qatar Airways’ oneworld hub, and Dubai is a growing stop-over and expatriate destination for Finns. With Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian and Israeli airspace now effectively off-limits, Finnair is also rerouting many of its flights to India, Southeast Asia and Australia, adding up to 90 minutes to block-times and forcing extra technical stops for refuelling and crew legality.

For travellers suddenly finding themselves rerouted through unfamiliar airports, securing the right transit or short-stay visas can be a headache. VisaHQ’s Finland platform (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) offers an efficient way to check requirements and file applications online, ensuring that last-minute detours via hubs such as Istanbul or Frankfurt don’t stall an itinerary.

Corporate travel managers are advised to check revised minimum-connect times at Helsinki-Vantaa, especially for Asia-bound itineraries. Travellers ticketed on the cancelled Gulf flights will receive e-mail or SMS prompts offering either re-routing (subject to seat availability on partner carriers via Istanbul or Frankfurt) or a full refund. Finnair has activated an online hotel-voucher tool for passengers stranded mid-journey and reminded companies that EU 261 compensation rules apply.

From a mobility-planning perspective, multinationals moving staff between Finland and the Middle East should prepare for at least two weeks of disruption. Air-freight capacity via Finnair Cargo will also tighten, potentially complicating time-sensitive project shipments. HR teams are urged to track employees’ 90-day Schengen allowance carefully: extended detours through non-Schengen hubs can inadvertently reset stay calculations once flights eventually resume direct routes.

Finnair says it is monitoring regional Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) hourly and will update its traffic plan “as soon as the safety situation permits.” The carrier last mounted a comparable suspension in August 2024 during the Red Sea drone crisis, but this is the first time both Gulf spokes have been grounded simultaneously.
