Prague Airport Cancels 32 Flights to Middle East as Regional Airspace Shuts Down
Václav Havel Airport Prague scrapped 32 departures and arrivals to Gulf and Levant destinations on Sunday 1 March after a wave of Iranian missiles prompted the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and several neighbouring states to close portions of their airspace. The cancellations principally hit services operated by Emirates, flydubai, Qatar Airways and Smartwings, stranding hundreds of Czech leisure and business travellers who use Dubai and Doha as long-haul transfer hubs.

Airport spokesperson Klára Divíšková told Expats.cz that airline check-in desks remained open to help passengers rebook, but warned that options were limited because the closures also disrupted traditional rerouting corridors over Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea. Carriers have begun offering refunds, date changes and, where feasible, alternative routings via Istanbul or European hubs unaffected by the crisis. Travellers holding separate tickets for onward connections are being urged to contact all airlines involved to avoid costly no-shows.

Travellers recalibrating their itineraries may also need to juggle new transit or entry requirements. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/) can quickly clarify whether a visa or electronic travel authorisation is required, arrange documentation, and even courier passports if time is tight—an especially handy safety net when last-minute rerouting pushes you through unfamiliar jurisdictions.

The shutdown comes just six weeks before Prague Airport is due to expand automated biometric kiosks ahead of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) go-live on 10 April. Border-police officials privately expressed concern that any prolonged diversion of Middle-Eastern traffic into already congested European hubs could mask operational testing of the new kiosks. Airports Council International Europe and IATA last month warned the European Commission that EES queues could reach four hours this summer unless extra staff and contingency waivers are approved.

For multinationals with regional headquarters in Dubai or Doha, the flight freeze underscores the importance of dual-routing strategies. Travel managers are advising employees to keep at least one Schengen and one non-Schengen connection option in travel-booking tools and to budget an extra 24 hours for return journeys. Cargo flows are also affected: Czech exporters who rely on belly-hold capacity to ship high-value goods to Asia via the Gulf are scrambling to secure allotments on freighters out of Frankfurt and Luxembourg.

Czech labour law obliges employers to cover reasonable accommodation and subsistence costs incurred by stranded staff; HR teams should therefore keep receipts and log delays in case insurance claims become necessary. The Foreign Ministry has reiterated its call for all Czech nationals abroad to register in DROZD and to monitor airline channels rather than social media rumours for the latest flight status.
