2,500 Austrians register for help as Foreign Ministry activates crisis protocols in Gulf region
Austria’s Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) confirmed on Sunday evening that more than 2,500 Austrian citizens had used the Auslandsservice app or the online crisis register after air-space closures left them stranded in the Gulf. The registrations allow consular officers to push security alerts and gather location data that can be shared with local authorities or charter operators.

Many of those affected are leisure travellers returning from winter sun holidays, but a significant share are business passengers and cruise-ship guests whose itineraries included Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi. Former Olympic marathon runner Susanne Pumper described to ORF how 2,000 passengers on the cruise liner “MSC Euribia” were prevented from disembarking in Abu Dhabi after explosions were heard near the port. Separately, Viennese entrepreneur Peter Leinfellner said his Doha stop-over hotel had asked guests not to leave the premises after Qatari authorities issued a shelter-in-place order.

The ministry’s crisis unit has set up a round-the-clock hotline and is liaising with Austrian Airlines and Emirates to organise ad-hoc ferries once over-flight permissions resume. Companies with stranded employees are urged to update emergency contacts and ensure that travellers have access to corporate medical insurance now that many retail travel-policies have lapsed under Security Level 4 conditions.

For travellers who suddenly need new or extended entry permits because their original visas are expiring during the disruption, VisaHQ’s Austria portal (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) offers a fast, fully online solution. The platform lets users check current requirements, submit applications and receive live support—an extra layer of assurance for both holiday-makers and corporate road-warriors while they wait for flights to resume.

Labour lawyers note that Austria’s amended Duty-of-Care Act, in force since January 2025, obliges employers to finance safe accommodation and onward travel for staff caught in declared crisis zones. Failure to do so can attract fines of up to €50,000 and civil liability for health costs.

BMEIA recommends that Austrians elsewhere in the Middle East download its app and enable location sharing, as further air-space disruptions cannot be ruled out.
