Deadline approaches for UK expats to swap Cyprus ‘yellow slips’ for 10-year biometric residence cards

Deadline approaches for UK expats to swap Cyprus ‘yellow slips’ for 10-year biometric residence cards
Community organisations in Paphos and Limassol have renewed calls for British nationals and other non-EU residents to convert their old registration certificates—commonly known as ‘yellow slips’—into the new biometric residence permits mandated by Cyprus’ Aliens and Immigration Service. A reminder circulated on 28 February by the Tala Community News blog warns that appointment backlogs at Paphos Immigration now stretch to four months, with a further four-month wait for card issuance, meaning applicants should act immediately if they plan to travel within the next year.

Following Brexit, UK citizens lost EU freedom-of-movement rights and must carry proof of lawful residence that meets EU Entry/Exit System (EES) standards. While yellow slips remain valid inside Cyprus, holders risk extra scrutiny—and, from late-2027, possible refusal of entry—at Schengen borders once the EES rolls out. The biometric card therefore future-proofs mobility by embedding fingerprint and facial data that can be read automatically at EU frontier kiosks.

Applicants must file form MUKW3, pay a €30 fee and appear in person for biometrics. The Ministry of Migration advises submitting one email request per family to the local immigration office, listing passport and Alien Registration numbers in capital letters. Individuals with mobility or tech challenges can request assistance via a dedicated community volunteer network.

For employers, ensuring that UK assignees have upgraded documents is critical; delays could jeopardise business travel to mainland Europe or cause issues when renewing social-insurance registrations. HR teams should audit residence-permit expiry dates and plan for an eight-month lead time, especially for staff whose travel calendars include Schengen destinations.

Converting to the biometric permit also confers a 10-year validity, reducing administrative overhead for both the employee and the company’s mobility function. Failure to convert before the final cut-off—expected in mid-2027—may require applicants to restart the residence process from scratch.
