Finland to close embassy in Yangon, shifts visa services to Bangkok
Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed on 27 February that its embassy in Yangon will shut its doors permanently on 28 February 2026. After the closure, all consular services—including passport renewals, emergency assistance and residence-permit biometrics—will be handled by the Finnish embassy in Bangkok, more than 580 km away. Germany will act as Finland’s Schengen-visa representative in Myanmar.

The decision follows three turbulent years in Myanmar, where security risks and shrinking diplomatic footprints have made routine consular work increasingly difficult. For the 100-plus Finnish citizens resident in the country, the logistics of obtaining a new passport now involve at least one international trip. Corporate assignees on rotation with forestry and telecom projects will need to build Bangkok stopovers into their travel budgets and schedules.

One practical workaround for both individuals and HR departments is to outsource the paperwork to a specialised visa agency. VisaHQ, for instance, can pre-check Finnish visa and passport applications, book biometric slots in Bangkok and advise on any Thai transit-visa requirements, reducing both time and travel costs; full details are available at https://www.visahq.com/finland/

Finnish employers recruiting talent from Myanmar also face a new layer of complexity: residence-permit applicants must submit fingerprints and original documents in Bangkok. While online filing is possible, personal appearance at an external service provider is compulsory for biometrics. HR teams should therefore plan for extra travel days, accommodation costs and, in some cases, Thai transit visas.

The Foreign Ministry said development-co-operation projects in education and vocational training will continue, administered remotely from Helsinki and via partner NGOs. It hinted that the closure is part of a broader cost-saving and risk-management review of Finland’s 90-mission network.

Practically, the shift mirrors a trend among Nordic countries to consolidate visa issuance in regional hubs—Sweden already covers Laos from Bangkok, for example—allowing them to maintain Schengen-wide service levels with fewer diplomatic posts in fragile states.
