Private Operator Westbahn Expands to Austria’s South Corridor, Challenging ÖBB on Key Business-Travel Route
Austria’s long-distance rail market will become markedly more competitive this Sunday as Vienna-based Westbahn launches its first services on the so-called Südstrecke from Vienna via Graz and Klagenfurt to Villach. The privately backed operator—whose shareholders include construction magnate Hans Peter Haselsteiner and France’s state railway SNCF—has until now focused on the lucrative Weststrecke between Vienna and Salzburg. The Kurier reported the expansion early on 27 February.

Westbahn is investing €120 million in three new six-car KISS trainsets from Swiss manufacturer Stadler. The initial timetable provides one return trip per day, ramping up to five by late May. Journey times will mirror Austrian Federal Railways’ (ÖBB) Railjet fast services, but Westbahn is banking on aggressive pricing, free Wi-Fi and flexible ticketing—features that made it popular with SMEs and consultants shuttling between Vienna and Linz over the past decade.

For corporate travellers, the move breaks ÖBB’s quasi-monopoly on the south corridor, a lifeline for car-parts suppliers in Styria and the burgeoning semiconductor cluster around Villach. More frequency and price competition should translate into lower travel budgets and better last-minute availability during trade-fair peaks such as Graz’s “Industriemesse”. The company claims the new route will create 100 jobs and reach profitability within three years.

The launch also raises wider questions about track-access charges and fair competition. ÖBB’s infrastructure arm controls timetabling on the busy Semmering Base Tunnel approach; Westbahn has hinted it may appeal to the rail regulator if it feels disadvantaged in slot assignments. EU open-access rules oblige Austria to grant non-discriminatory pathing, but observers recall earlier disputes when Westbahn first entered the Weststrecke in 2011.

Regardless of regulatory sparring, business-mobility planners now have a credible alternative for meetings in Graz or electronics-hub Villach without resorting to short-haul flights. The development underscores how liberalisation can widen sustainable travel choices—an important ESG consideration for multinationals with net-zero targets.
