Dense Fog on Troodos Routes—Police Impose Speed Limits and Advise Essential-Travel Only

Dense Fog on Troodos Routes—Police Impose Speed Limits and Advise Essential-Travel Only
Cyprus Police have issued an urgent road-safety bulletin after dense fog reduced visibility to a few metres on the Platres–Troodos and Prodromos–Troodos mountain roads. The advisory, released at 11:06 on Sunday, warns of "very limited visibility" and calls on motorists to keep headlights on low beam, maintain extra following distance and avoid unnecessary journeys to ski resorts.

The announcement is more than a routine weather note for mobility planners. The Troodos ring-road is the principal corridor for weekend leisure traffic and for service engineers accessing the island’s main telecommunication and radar sites. Logistic firms moving household goods to expats’ mountain residences also rely on the route, and several have already shifted Monday deliveries to mid-week.

Cyprus Police reminded drivers that failure to adapt speed to weather conditions carries on-the-spot fines of up to €300 and three penalty points. In 2025, the winter campaign registered 74 fog-related accidents, nine involving rental cars headed for chalet handovers.

Relocation providers are contacting clients with check-in appointments at Troodos hotels, advising them to consider the alternate Kakopetria route or to postpone travel until conditions improve. Car-rental desks at Larnaca and Paphos airports are distributing multilingual leaflets on winter-driving best practice.

The fog is expected to lift gradually after midday Monday as a cold front pushes through, but the Meteorological Department says another bout of low cloud could return overnight if temperatures drop below 3 °C in the highlands.
