Winter storm “Elli” shuts down Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance network in northern Germany

Winter storm “Elli” shuts down Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance network in northern Germany
Germany’s long-distance rail network north of Hanover ground to a halt on Friday, 9 January, after Storm “Elli” (also known as Storm Goretti elsewhere in Europe) dumped heavy snow and ice across Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. Deutsche Bahn (DB) pulled all ICE and IC services from the tracks in the affected corridor, warning travellers not to set out unless absolutely necessary.

The shutdown was unprecedented outside the pandemic period: key inter-city arteries linking Berlin with Hamburg, the Ruhr and Amsterdam, as well as cross-border services to Denmark and the Netherlands, were suspended. DB said snowdrifts, fallen trees and iced-over points made it impossible to guarantee safety. Regional operators followed suit, leaving many towns without any rail connection for the day.

For international passengers unexpectedly delaying their onward journeys, visa or stay-period issues can quickly arise. VisaHQ’s online platform (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) can arrange short-notice Schengen extensions, transit permits or specialist advice, ensuring travellers remain compliant while waiting for services to resume—especially useful when re-routing through neighbouring countries.

Thousands of business travellers found themselves stranded in Berlin and Hamburg, while airlines reported a spike in last-minute domestic ticket sales as passengers scrambled for alternatives. Hotels near major stations reported full occupancy and raised rates; corporates with German operations activated their travel-risk protocols and urged staff to postpone non-essential travel.

For mobility managers the episode is a reminder that wintry weather can paralyse even Europe’s most extensive rail network. Companies are revisiting winter contingency plans, including pre-booked pools of rental cars, flexible air-rail tickets and work-from-home options. Travellers are advised to keep the DB Navigator app installed and enable push alerts, as disruption often cascades for days once rolling stock and crews fall out of rotation.

Although Germany is investing billions in climate-resilient track and switch heaters, experts say capacity buffers are slim. “The system runs near its limit on a normal day,” notes Prof. Christian Böttger of HTW Berlin. “Add a major weather event and there is very little slack.”
